Woody Guthrie: 1912 - 1967.
The original lonesome traveler and singing poet of protest, Woody Guthrie is where folk music developed a conscience. Guthrie’s brand of emotive, provocative songs illuminated the plight of the common man and condemned society’s inequities.
The message cut to the core with deceptively simple lyrics that spoke volumes with their honesty and humor. His talent for storytelling captured perfectly his own independent spirit and the spirit of the times. If Guthrie had only sparked Bob Dylan’s muse, it would have been enough, but he also played a part in the movements of 60s protest, skiffle, British blues, Merseybeat, and psychedelic rock. One man and a guitar, rooted in blues, ballads, and breakdowns, Guthrie set the standard for all folk music singers/songwriters.
